Dear Hans
Thank you very much for explaining how 8th 4th 8th is played in swing rhythms.
My jazz books only say about 8th 8th being played as 8th_8th 8th within a triplet.

Playing "8th 4th" on the Jazz Tutor
Thank you for your reply and for sharing your thoughts on the beat, Hans. What is the custom in Jazz for a quaver (an eighth note) followed by a crotchet (a quarter note), please? Is the crotchet played as dotted and the quaver as a semiquaver, in the same way as when we play a crotchet followed by ...

Playing "8th 4th" on the Jazz Tutor
Lesson 11 on the Standard Tutor has come up with "4th 8th dotted 4th" in 3/4 time. If we respect the three 4th beats, we would notate it "[4th] [8th 8th]_[4th]": the first beat contains the 4th, the second beat contains the two 8ths and the third beat contains the 4th. The second...

Incorrect Rhythm Notation
It seems to me the rhythm notations are incorrect. I have Grade VI Music Theory (ABRSM) and I was taught to respect the beat/pulse when notating music. In other words, in 4/4 time, not to write a quaver followed by a crotchet but rather to write it as three quavers, with the latter two tied. This ma...

Thank you for your suggestions, Bojan and Quentin. I've passed with 80% using the mouse, and I might well plug in the microphone from time to time when I'm doing my rhythm training. Also, I didn't realise we can adjust the speed while doing the pre-set exercises. I can't help wondering whether some ...

Rhythm Reading: Lesson 25
I find this lesson too hard because I don't seem to be able to press the CTRL button on my keyboard rapidly enough (my thoughts are definitely ahead of what I can do with the CTRL button!): is there anything else I can try to make the lesson more responsive without buying a electronic drum kit?

There's an intermittent error on Melodic Dictation lesson 29: 'Could not make a melody with the current settings!'. The melody then selected seems to be the previous one, and often the notes on the staff are labelled '??'. It seems to be associated with having the 'Auto new question' feature enabled...

Thank you for your reply, Quentin. I've read the thread to which you referred me: I would still prefer to have the option of a 'Tritone' button for interval recognition, and to have the option for EarMaster to refer to the fourth degree of the Gb major scale as Cb rather than B (which is, of course,...

I've just started Exercise 29. EM5 selected C major, for which I understand the IV chord to include the notes F, A and C; the V chord to include the notes G, B and D and the I chord to include the notes C, E and G. However, the dictation passage is A-D'-E'-A-G-F-G. The first note and the last three ...
