question about standard tutor

Post by marian »

I have been using EarMaster to learn to identify intervals, and for the most part I just use the custom settings. Recently, however, I tried the standard tutor, and I don't really understand the way it is structured. Is it supposed to be easier to hear intervals if you know what key they come from or that they are diatonic or something? I thought that "functional" ear training was a different skill, one that you should exercise mainly with the melodic dictation exercise.

Hello,
Functional ear training is about identifying the role of a pitch within a key, which is what you can do in EarMaster's melodic dictation exercise. However, even though you can see and hear the root tone and key in interval exercises, you are not practicing functional ear training. You are working on your relative pitch skills.
