Customized settings problem

Post by Chuck Culbertson »

I purchased Earmaster 5 (box) for my Jazz Theory class. I loaded it to my desktop. I practiced doing chord identification using customized settings.

My problem - My Professor sets up a link on a web course to Earmaster 5 with the weekly assignment set to "his" customized chord identification. So I click on his link and save it to my desktop. Then I have my EarMaster link and the Professors customized link both on Desktop. His link opens my software.

When I open the Professor's shortcut on my Desktop, Earmaster 5 opens, and Customized Exercise and Chord Identification are selected. When I click on Begin, the Customized Exercise window for selecting chords comes up, but it does not show the chords my instructor wants me to learn. It shows chords selected that I had previously selected. If I "Deselect All" and then reopen the file, it only shows a Major chord selected.

I had informed my Professor 2 weeks ago about this and over the phone he guided me through different ways to try to get his chords to appear during chord selection, and eventually the proper chords came up. But since he was having me try different things, I did not write down the process, and according to him, no one else in class is having this problem.

I'm thinking something on my EarMaster set up is not allowing the Professor's chord selections to be set. Perhaps I changed a setting that doesn't allow his selections to override mine? Please help. Thank you.

Also, under EarMaster File, I click on "Save Exercise As", and File name shows as my Teachers assignment - EarMasterrupert eartraing 5 dominant with b 9 _ 9.ear, but under that in the window is CustomAutosave.ear

Is that supposed to be there? Could that be why its saving old data and not populating the new chords?

In the Training wizard (the startup window) in EarMaster, you normally have 3 options in the "Training mode" frame: Standard tutor, Jazz tutor and Customized exercise.
When you double-click a tutor file with lessons on your desktop, EarMaster will run and you will get a 4th option in the Training mode. This 4th option shows the title of the lesson file. To use those lessons you have to make sure that they are selected in the Training mode. You should not choose Customized exercise because this is your own private configurations of the exercises.

When I double click the Professor's file on my Desktop no 4th option appears. Only Standard Tutor, Jazz Tutor, and Customized.

The Professor's tutor file on desktop has the correct name of that weeks lesson (Dominant chords with flat 9 and # 9). And like I said before he was able to walk me through EarMaster Pro via some windows where we eventually saw his file name, and when I clicked on it, the Chord Identification exercise opened up with the correct chords. But he kept saying "try this, now try this," so I can't remember the exact process of finding the file.

Since no one else in my class is having this problem, is it possible I changed a setting on the Ear Master Pro when I was doing my own Chord Identification from before?

Would you suggest that I Delete my EarMaster Pro 5, and then reload the program from the CD-Rom again to reset everything to the original Default settings,or is there another way I can reset?

Maybe my title of "Customized Settings Problem' was incorrect, since I was not aware that a 4th option should appear in Training mode. The otherstudents in my class don't save the Professpr's tutor file to the Desktop, theyjust click on the link he provides, and it opens up EarMaster Pro. I only saved it to Desktop because when he was troubleshooting with me, he had me do it.

Please use the "Check for update" function in EarMaster to get the latest update of EarMaster.
If this does not solve the problem, then try instead to open EarMaster and choose "Open Tutor" from the "File" menu.

This should make the 4th option appear

Updates are up to date.

When I click on Open Tutor under File, there is an empty window.
At the bottom it says Go To: Personal Folder (Chuck)
If I select Go To: Common Folder (All Users) it shows EarMaster Jazz Tutor, and EarMaster Standard Tutor.

I can't see my CD-Rom having corrupted data causing this problem, and since no one else is having this problem, I don't see a problem with the Professor's link. I keep thinking user error from me somehow.

In the "Open tutor" window, click the "Browse" button to locate the tutor file on the desktop.

I clicked on Open Tutor link.
Clicked Browse.
Look In: EarMaster
Files of Type: EarMaster 5.9/4.0
File Name: empty

Then I didLook In: Desktop
When I typed in the first letter of my Professor's file (R), this appeared:
rupert eartraing 5 dominant with b 9 _ 9

I click on Open, and it takes me to an empty window.

Now what?

It seems like the file you have received from your teacher is Customized exercise file (extension .ear) and not a tutor file (extension .tut).

A customized exercise file (.ear) cannot contain chord definitions, it simply uses the chords already defined on the computer, so this file type is only for your own personal use.

I understand its for my lesson, but when Chord Identification is opened, the chords selected by the Professor is supposed to appear at the bottom of the lesson.

Example - 7th, 9th, Minor Ninth.

I guess i'll try to reload the EarMaster software and see if that fixes it. I don't know why it works for everyone else and not me.
