How to install Earmaster on a USB Stick without admin rights

Post by frimipiso »

Hi,

I would like to use my copy of Earmaster on a PC for which I do not have admin rights. I tried to copy the program directory from a PC where Earmaster was already installed onto a USB stick and to start it from the PC without admin rights. I just copied the earmaster directory from the programs directory.

However, I get error messages when Earmaster tries to save the user profile:

Code: Select all

Could not save user: XXXXX

The system cannot find the path specified:
H:\software\EarMaster Pro 5\Shared\Data\Users.da5
What can I do?

Thanks,

Jens

Hi Jens,

EarMaster must be installed on the computer with administrator access. Once it is installed, you will be able to use it from other accounts without administrator access though.

Some of the files used by the program are not located in the EarMaster folder, so it is not possible to simply copy it onto a USB key, it must be installed properly.

Well it works. I just cannot save the results. I would like to use Earmaster after working hours on my work PC, but there is no way that I could get admin rights to install SW that is not directly work related (I do not work in the music field :-))

Isn't it possible to set some environment variable or some config file to locate the user data on an arbitrary directory? By the way: I am sure that a lot of people would be quite happy about a portable USB stick version of EarMaster.

Cheers,

Jens

I can see your point. That would be a neat feature. EarMaster School actually lets you choose the default location of all user/result/ data files because it supports network installation, and can therefore run from a USB stick as you are trying to do. This is however not possible with the Pro version because it is not meant to run on a network (= from a shared drive).
