Microphone reacts to slow for the rhythm training

Post by eva1 »

Dear all,

I have a problem with the exercises on rhytm: no matter whether I choose to enter my answers via microphone or via the keyboard, it reacts too slow so that the program never receives the answer I clap or type in. Is there any help;-)?

Thanks a lot!

Please check this FAQ: http://www.earmaster.com/support/faq.htm#delay

The default MIDI device in WIndows has a very noticeable delay, but EarMaster includes a latency compensation tool to neutralize that delay.

Latency tool not helping me

Post by parencibia »

Hello:

I have the latency issue when trying to do rhythm exercises. My clapping is very significantly delayed with the metronome (almost a quaver delay using 90 bpm).

I am using the internal microphone of my laptop.

I tried the latency tool in "MIDI devices" section but it's not helping due to the following reasons:

1) The delay value is not making any effect. In other words, no matter what value I enter, it doesn't help to synchronize the visual flash and the electronic clap. The visual flash is always a little bit earlier.

2) The delay of the electronic clap and visual flash in the latency tool seems to be much smaller than the problem I have with the microphone. I guess that this delay setup only affects the device output (speaker) but my problem is related to the input (mic).

Could you please guide me on how I can introduce a latency setting in some other way?

Thanks.

Found a workaround

Post by parencibia »

Hello:

I have been trying for a while and I fixed the issue for me. I was doing something wrong with the latency tool because I know made it work by pushing the +/- buttons on the ms number. The issue still was that having the visual flash aligned with the clap, the real exercises were still misaligned. What I did was to cheat the latency tool by adding additional latency. Now it works fine.

So, it works for me. However, it would be nice to make a better fix. Maybe a tool that listens to its own beats via the mic so that the adjustment can be more precise.

Best regards.

This is actually a workaround that some users have mentioned:

1) Set a delay (120ms is a good place to start)
2) Make a customized exercise for rhythm reading with only quarter notes
3) Set the volume of your speakers to a low level (or use headphones) to avoid feedback
4) place the mic in front of one of the speakers (or the headphones)
5) See if the green dots are aligned with the quarter notes. If they aren't, adjust the delay up or down according to how the dot is placed.
