Convert standard tutor to custom tutor?

Post by Prof Andrew »

Greetings,

I like the Melodic Dictation tutors you have built into Ear Master. However, I don't like the settings and some of the exercises. Is there some way to convert the built in tutors into custom tutors en masse, then make changes as I need, rather than starting completely from scratch?

Yes, I do have Ear Master School.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Andrew,

You can edit the included tutors with the tutor editor (from the Exercise Settings menu). Use the Open Tutor function in the editor to open the standard tutor, make your changes and finally save them. But remember to save them under a different name, because the built-in tutors are read only files. :-)

Thank you for your reply. That's exactly what I wanted!

I have two feature requests related to the melodic dictation assignments I wrote about (which probably applies to other tutors as well):

1. When dragging notes below or above a staff, it's hard to know exactly where to place a note because no ledger lines show up. I've seen other software that shows the ledger lines when the mouse hovers above or below the staff, so I know it is possible. It would keep students from having to go back and correct wrongly placed notes.

2. More important for me: is there any way to increase the number under "Play question limit" in the "Exercise control settings..."? I don't know how students are elsewhere, but for my students allowing only three hearings of an eleven-note dictation exercise is just not sufficient. Can't that be opened up to whatever the professor wants, or at least up through, say, ten or twelve playings?

Thank you for your consideration of these ideas. I'm very impressed with your software and support and hope to continue using it in the future.

1) Just click and hold down the mouse button while you drag the tone up and down, then you see the tone with ledger lines and you can release the button when the note is at the right position.

2) Thank you for the suggestion. We will include this in the next version of EarMaster.
