how to install a microphone on a mac computer?

Post by ilkijane »

Hi,
Probably, it's obvious but I would like to buy a microphone to practice the intervals on my mac os x, version 10.6.8.
I don't know what to buy..Do I need an interface to plug the microphone to earmaster pro 5 as well? if yes, would you advise me some microphones and/or interfaces, please?
thank you a million times in advance,

Hi,

Honestly, we have had rather good results with the built-in microphones of iMacs and MacBooks, but of course a better mic will give better results. Any microphone that can be plugged into your mac will work with EarMaster, the difference residing in the quality of the microphone itself.

Usually, to use professional vocal mics with a computer, you need a preamp, sometimes even with phantom power (condenser mics). The most convenient solution in that case is to go for an external soundcard with mic preamps, but that makes the solution rather pricey if you are not also using it for home studio recording.

In any case, we advise you to use headphones when singing tones or clapping rhythms in EarMaster, as they would otherwise be fed back into the microphone, creating a loop.

The Apogee One is definitely a great option. Easy to use, quality components, and looking sleek. Perhaps not the cheapest solution though if you are not going to use it for other things than EarMaster.
