MIDI in crash with mac version

Post by rbrantg »

I'm running EarMaster School on OSX 10.6 using a GR-55 for MIDI input. My previous computer was running 10.5 with no issues at all. This one is crashing from MIDI signals very, very often. I may get to play in 5 or 6 notes before it goes down. Often, there's no error message. Occasionally, I see something about a divide by zero error.

I've done a fresh install of EarMaster after deleting all of the related files. I've also reinstalled the driver for my MIDI interface and zapped pram. Any thoughts? Using this has become a part of my daily practice routine and that of many of my students. I'd hate to lose it.

Have you installed the newest update (HELP or EarMaster School 5 menu -->CHECK FOR UPDATES)?

Hi, Quentin. I downloaded the installer again yesterday and did an install from that. I then checked for updates and it said none were available.

Ok, thanks.

In which exercise(s) are the crashes happening?

It seems that the GR-55 is feeding the program with multiple MIDI channels (1 channel per string), but EarMaster (and most other MIDI applications) are expecting input from one single MIDI channel. I think the crashes you are experiencing are a direct result of that. Perhaps there is a setting for the GR-55 which outputs only one MIDI channel?

Thank you, Quentin. I changed the settings so that it's transmitting everything on one channel, but the crash still happens. Any other ideas?

I think I mentioned in an email that I was never asked to reenter my serial number after I'd deleted all of the old files. Is it possible that the file containing the serial number has some information about PPC vs Intel architecture and that deleting it would cure the problem? I don't know where that file is.

Many thanks,
Brant

Hi Brant,
If you ran the update, then all application-related files should have been replaced. Your credentials (name/serial #) should on the other have been kept intact. I will text a MIDI guitar we have here with 10.6 and see how it works out.

Thanks Quentin. I'm looking forward to hearing if you can discover the root of the problem.

Many thanks,

Hi Brant,
I got to test EarMaster with our YouRock MIDI guitar, and it doesn't make the program crash, it is behaving normally all the way, just like with a MIDI keyboard, so I think there might be a specific incompatibility with the Roland guitar in question.

Thanks for checking it out, Quentin. The GR-55 is a MIDI converter and sound bank for 13-pin guitars. Strange that it worked just fine under 10.5 and that it works with all of my other software under 10.6. Any ideas as to what might be causing the incompatibility?

Many thanks,
Brant

hmm, maybe the GR-55 is feeding too many MIDI messages into EarMaster. Could you perhaps try to record some MIDI music using the GR55 (in a DAW) and send us the MIDI file so thaat we may have a look at it? You may send the file to our suport email (suport (at) earmaster.com)

Recording a 10 seconds long sequence would be fine
