newbie: not recognizing correct answers

Post by drtechdaddy »

I just installed earmaster on win 7.
I started on Interval Recognition lesson 1.
It does not seem to recognize my "correct" answers. The correct notes appear in the message at the top and on the staff, but the answer is not being recognized as correct.
I tried first with MIDI input (midi keyboard), but also got the same results with Piano input (clicking on-screen keyboard).
I set the program options to enter notes 'one at a time' because that's the way the question is played.
I think I might need a complete list of option settings and a step-by-step tutorial.

PS--Still having problem with MIDI input. I did find the problem with Piano input--I was not clicking the Show Anwser button after input. But when I do the same thing with MIDI input, I still get Ïncorrect Answer"even though the message and staff and keyboard all indicate I entered the correct notes!

Even thouh the notes show up on the staff and the keyboard when I strike them, it seems they are not beign recognized by the answer analyzer. When I click "Play your answer"after entering, it only plays back C, not the notes I played on the MIDI instrument.

In Interval Identification, the first tone is always inserted by default, so if you play it in your answer, it will be inserted twice, and will therefore be evaluated as a wrong answer.

If it is not that, please let me know and I'll try to find out what else could cause your answers not to be accepted.

I finally did get it to work. Playing the first note wasn't the problem;
actually, it seems to require BOTH notes after all.
But the problem does seem to be related to "'insert."'
I reduced Program Settings-Auto Insert After to it's lowest setting, 600ms.
Then if I hold the note long enough, EarMaster will "take"it.
But 120 BPM is only 500 ms/note, so EM doesn't "listen"as fast as it plays!
I wonder how that will work out for the rhythm exercises? Guess I should go try some!

Auto Insert is only for audio input, so I guess the problem is somewhere else. Have you tried to deactivate "One-by-one tone insert" in Program Settings-->MIDI Devices and then enter your answers harmonically (both tones at the same time)? Is that working fine? If not, then I think you should rather look in the MIDI In settings and/or the MIDI device configuration both inside and outside of EarMaster.

The actual behavior is this:
I'm doing interval identification exercise
I have one-by-one tone input checked
I click New Question, the question plays.
A gray keynote appears on the staff

I play a note on the piano.

As soon as I strike the key, the piano sends a MIDI note on/v127 message.
The note is immediately displayed on the staff, a few note spaces to the right of the keynote.
(At this point the note does not yet seem to be "recognized" by the answer checker.)

After a delay of a large fraction of a second, the note moves to the left to the same horizontal position as the keynote.
At this point, the note is considered part of the answer.

I can then play the second note of the interval,
which first displays to the right as above,
then later moves left.

If I play more than one note at a time,
or play the second note before the first note is "accepted",
all MIDI note messages are sent,
but each new note displayed but ERASES THE PREVIOUS, so only the last note received is kept as part of the answer]

I tried with two different keyboards and two different connections (one MIDI Uno, one USB),
so I don't think the delay has anything to do with the MIDI hardware.

The software is "useable" this way, but the excessive delay between accepting notes means I have to play back at a slower tempo than the question (if i leave the question tempo at 120bpm).
