EM plays Major Cadences in minor scales

Post by KostaC »

I get major cadences and root chords for dorian, phrygian and locrian modes in melodic dictation. Should it be minor?

You should not get major cadences in dorian, phrygian or locrian.
We will correct this, and thanks for pointing this out.

The question is: what should you get?
Is it just minor, or is it a chord cadence tailored for the specific mode?
And what would such a cadence look like?
We also consider of removing the cadences for these modes if no clear cadence can be found that is generally used in these cases.

Anyone with an opinion on this is welcome to reply to this post.

Good question. I have no idea what cadences should be played for these. I-IV-V-I in locrian mode will sound very strange. Maybe a harmonic minor cadence for every scale that has a minor third - just to establish that minor feeling (like in EM5). But i leave for others to tell better idea.
