How To Use As Functional Pitch Ear Trainer

I want to use Ear Master not to recognize intervals put pitch function. I.E. I want it to play a cadence (minor or major) and then play a pitch (one of the 12 tones) so that I understand it (the pitch) in relation to the key centre. Really its the only reason why I want to train my ears. Is there any way to get Ear MAster to do something like this. (It has to be all 12 notes)

Hi,

Yes this is possible. To do that, follow these steps:

1. At the start screen, choose "Customized Activity" for training mode, and Melodic Dictation for Activity.
2. In the Activity setup window, select "Generated melodies", set the number of tones to "1", activate the "Play tonic of key option and set it to "Cadence", and finally choose "Scale degrees" for "tone naming" in the exercise control settings.
3. You can save that setup for later use via the "FILE-->SAVE CUSTOM ACTIVITY SETUP" command.

And it works for everything except if I set the scale to Chromatic - and then Earmaster won't let me chose a cadence ( I suppose it doesn't know whether it was major or minor. It works on all the other scales I think. Also it would be nice to have jazz cadences here (II V I - minor and major).

I can't imagine it would be a difficult fix to allow the Chromatic scale a cadence.

Ok So there is a way to use Melodic Diction activity to produce however many random chromatic tones after a classical I IV V I cadence. As per the instructions above but in Activity Set Up choose all the pitches in a chromatic scale - ie all pitches. And then under the options choose play cadence - and voila. There is one more problem , the chromatic notes chosen are all from the octave within which the cadence is played (Tone Range doesn't seem to make any difference). To really improve one's relative/functional pitch the test needs to be thus: a cadence in any random octave followed by a note (s) in any random octave. That would be best . And one more thing. When using as per last missive - ear trainer just randomly applies key signatures. 5 sharps will have a cadence in Bb or whatever. Strange.

You can get random chromatic tones in the full pitch range.
Simply specify the "Largest interval" and the "Ambitus". Set both to "Full pitch range".

PS. if there are any problems with the cadence being played in the key shown on the staff, please contact support. This is not normal behavior.

I am a beginner using the trial version of the most basic Earmaster. I don't see any exersice like melodic diction. Is this because of my program version?

I want to set the program to display a relative do. I am not sure if the question about a functional pitch is the same thing. If not, I am wondering if it is possible to set my version as a relative do.

Hi Ellen,

In EarMaster Essential, there are 4 activities, whereas EarMaster Pro 6 and the Teacher edition have 14. Melodic Dictation is not included in Essential, only in the Pro and Teacher versions.

You can use relative-Do solfege in EarMaster Essential with the available exercises. This is done by changing the Tone Naming setting in "Exercise Settings" from "Anglo-Saxon (C, D, E,...)" to "Relative-Do Solfege".
