Lesson 13 is the first "hard" lesson - you have to know the greater interval when there is no common note.
However, since I know that we are dealing with a semitone and tone (minor 2nd and major 2nd) and I know that the minor 2nd has a dissonant quality while the major 2nd has a neutral quality.
So instead of mentally subtracting the frequencies, I'm just choosing the major 2nd by noting the tonal quality, not the difference.
Is this sort of cheating going to cause problems for me later?

no brain, no pain
I personally do the same, identifying the interval's tonal quality instead of hearing and thinking intervals in tones and semitones. It is not the most academic way of hearing intervals, but I believe it has some advantages. However, this habit might become a burden for advanced ear training studies, and bad habits are often hard to get rid off.

I really believe that everyone identifies intervals the way you describe. Yes, you can also hear the difference but the main thing is based on the colour of the intervals. If it was so obvious to use differences, you could go directly to the last lesson whereas you have to learn new intervals to progress so it proves that it is based on the colour of the interval.

listen for the quality ...
i agree whole heartily with YANG....
LISTEN FOR THE SONG (first to melody notes of the associated tune) IN THE INTERVAL...BUT ALSO GET USED TO HOW IT MAKES U FEEL....
ITS SORTA LIKE HEARING CHORDS...ESPECIALLY YOUR 7ths...m7, M7, dom 7, dim7, m7flat5 ,
they ALL HAVE a DIFFERENT QUALITY....AND ONCE U BEGIN TO DISCRIMINATE bet. the qualities it gets easier and easier to hear them...
