MIDI In on Mac Version

Post by RobtCowie »

Hi all,

Just paid for my serial # and am all legit here now. I like the program a lot but am having one rather big problem:

When I try to use my MIDI keyboard for answer input, the program doesn't acknowledge the answers given. I am running Earmaster 5 on a Mac PowerPC iBook. OS X 10.4.11. My keyboard is a Yamaha P-120. and USB Midi interface is a M-Audio Uno.

The MIDI works fine for output, so questions/examples are played through on my MIDI keyboard just fine. But when I, for example, want to play in an answer for melodic dictation, nothing happens. I play the notes, but they don't show up on the staff or light up on the graphic keyboard in the window. Frustrating, because it slows things down.

The update that came out today said that it was supposed to address some MIDI-In issues, but I see no change.

What's going on. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks,

Robert

Hi,

Is your MIDI In button lower right toggled on to enable MIDI in? And does it flash when you press any key on your MIDI keyboard?

Best regards,

Yes it's toggled on, but no it does not flash. With the first version I had (not the most recent update) the midi toggle would flash when I played something, but still the note would not be recognized by the program in any way.

I hope they do an update that fixes this issue soon!

Is your MIDI keyboard input working in other programs?

Is your MIDI keyboard selected as MIDI input in EarMaster?

We have been trying to find out what may happen but haven't been able to reproduce it. We have tried with OS X 10.4, OS X 10.5, Intel and Power PC processors, USB Midi keyboard, and regular MIDI via 2 different MIDI interfaces connected to 2 different Roland keyboards and a Clavinova. A new update will be up in the coming days. Maybe it will solve your issue with MIDI.

Best regards,
Quentin

Hi Quentin,

Thanks for all your help trouble-shooting the problem on your end. I appreciate it!

There seems to be some kind of compatibility issue with either the M-Audio Uno Usb interface and EarMaster, or the Uno Interface and my Yamaha P-120, or the Uno interface and the Mac. I'm not sure which, but whatever the problem is, the Uno Interface is involved!

I finally got things to work correctly by using my M-Box 2 as the interface and am very happy to have figured out a solution.

Just for your information: I tried a friend's M-Audio Keystation 61es for midi input into Earmaster and...

1) with a straight usb-out to usb-in cord connection, everything worked fine.

2) with my Uno interface, the notes transposed all over the place, if they were recognized at all.

So again the Uno seems to be the culprit, I'm just not sure where in the Keyboard-Interface-Mac OSX-EarMaster 5.0 chain the compatibility issue lies.

Thanks again for your responses, they helped me figure out some ways of testing things on this end that led to a solution, and now I'm really looking forward to using the full potential of the program!

Best regards,

Robert

Hello Robert,
I'm glad your set up is now up and running with EarMaster :-) .
Have you tried to google your "UNO usb interface + MIDI issues"? Some people may have experienced the same problems as you. I'll try to have a look as soon as possible.
Regards,
Quentin
