Confused about exercise answers

Post by DS »

I'm just starting using EarMaster Pro and I don't think I have a clear understanding of this exercise.

I thought when performing the interval comparison exercises the goal is to identify the largest interval.

In the "Minor and Major 2nd Harmonic" excercise I keep getting incorrect answers.

For example in the exercise Answer A is a Minor 2nd (notes B & C) and Answer B is a Major 2nd (notes A# & B#). The correct answer B.

Why is Answer B a larger interval?

Thanks -

Answer B is correct because A# and B# are one whole step apart, while B and C are only a half-step apart. (See the piano display for a visual representation of this difference.) B and C, like E and F, are only a half-step part even though the difference in letter names would seem to indicate a whole step.

The greater interval is the interval in which the note are wider apart. For example, A and D are at a greater interval than A and C.

A minor second is a half step (one note higher). A major second is a whole step (two notes higher).

It might be helpful to get out your piano or guitar or other instrument and play around with the difference. Play any note, then a half step above it, then play the same note, then a whole step above it. Then sing along with the difference (singing can help a lot if you can match pitch). However, singing differences of a half a step is surprisingly difficult for many people.
