Constant delay with microphone input for Rhythm imitation

Post by edspyhill01 »

During the rhythm imitation lessons I cannot get the microphone to accept input (claps) at the time I clap. The input arrives about a 1/16th note late consistently. I have tried a mic plugged into the sound card and I am trying again today with a USB microphone.

I went through the microphone wizard menu 3 times and changed the sensitivity, but no luck. I configured the Vista Windows sound input using the menus.

The imitation parts of EarMaster have been completely unusable because of this problem.

Is there any solution to this problem?

I did find many examples in the forum of people having the same problem. The complaints are for mics into soundcards, USB mics, and MIDI input. I have not found any solutions other than "get a better sound card". My Soundcard is an upgraded soundcard on a Dell with 4GB of memory.

I actually found a thread with someone with the exact same problem - a 1/16th note delay!

Here is a link to the results of a search using just "MIDI".

I bought a new USB mic Saturday that does not work. I don't feel like spending more money on a MIDI keyboard that also doesn't work for people.

I cannot use 60% of the software features. I'll find a better software trainer for rhythm studies.

Hello,

This latency is related to your hardware and is not caused by EarMaster.

For MIDI input, there is a MIDI compensation tool under "TOOLS>MIDI Devices>Synchronize Rhythms" where you will be able to adjust the delay between note input and sound. You should try this out to fix the delay when using MIDI input.

As for microphone input, I can tell you we are not experiencing latency with very weak hardware here (internal soundcard, cheap headset, and 2gb ram). Have you tried to use your internal soundcard with your mic to see if there still is latency?

Here's what I decided to do. I'm going to assume some or all of this mic input latency problem is an indication of my internal sense of rhythm. So I started working on the Rhythm Imitation exercises with a tempo of 50 (!). I'm still using the USB mic while I hunt down Soundblaster user docs to use a dynamic mic plugged into the sound card.

If I find out there are steps I need to do to config my soundcard, etc, I'll list it in this discussion.

Thank you for your help.
