Earmaster School 5 Mac OS X network

Post by ksmidt »

Recently I installed Earmaster on our new iMac's. I followed the instuctions for installation on a network.

Here is our setup:

1 Xserve
18 iMac's
gigabit network all on the same hp procurve switch
clients run Earmaster from a shared folder on the server

But often happens Earmaster displays an error saying it was not able to save the data because the file is in use with another program. At those moment 5 to 10 users a working with Earmaster on different iMac's at the same time.

How can we solve this?

When the message is shown there is an option to retry.

a) If it is a permanent error and it doesn't help to click Retry, then it might be because one or more users does not have the needed rights to Write their data to the shared data files on the server.

b) If it works after clicking Retry, then it is not a big problem. However, it should not happen with such a small number of users, so we would like to investigate it. Then please write to support[a]earmaster[d]com and elaborate:
Does it happen when they open EarMaster?, or when they close EarMaster?, or when they complete a lesson (save results)?
Is it only specific users and/or computers where it happens?

Thanks for your reply.

When the errors appear, retry doesn't help. At first, it happened last week when six users logged in for the first time in Earmaster (create account). Then the errors appear not able to write the data. But afterwards most of the users did appear in the users list (manage users).

The users do only have read and execute rights on the share Earmaster. Working en saving their work, works fine, unless more users are working at the same time. So could it be a rights issue?

One of them told me they also got an error "unable to save high score".

Should they all get write access on the share?
I thought it would be sufficient for running the program with read and execute rights.

So far as I'm aware of it happens to all users.

Yes, they must all have write access to the data files shared on the server.

Okay, I gave them also write access.
I'll let you know if this solves the problem concerning multiple users.

Error file in use

Post by ksmidt »

Hm, the error is still there. Today some students logged in for the first time. So they had to add themselves as a new user. After that it looks fine, but when they closed the program, the error is:

"file in use by other program, unable to save user data"

With some of the students Earmaster caused a spinning wheel.

As an administrator I saw in the list of users, some of the names are still green, indicating they are still logged in. But they logged out hours ago.

What can we do?

This is our setup again:

iMac's connected through Open Directory to a Xserve.
On the Xserve there's a shared folder with Earmaster School 5. They all have read, execute and write access (no delete). The program runs directly form the server over a gigabit network.

How did this all end?

Isn't it good to keep solutions in the thread?

I'm also working on getting Earmaster 5 School-edition have different users but hitting on some problems when trying to mount the remote program files on the clients.
