Please explain the user interface

I can't find this in the help. When practicing melodic dictation, I display the staff and the keyboard. Initially the staff shows a transparent gray bar to the right of the last entered note. Everything works OK as long as I don't make any mistakes, but if I delete a note, the gray bar collapses to a gray line. Thereafter, all notes entered on the keyboard pile up in the same location like a note cluster. The program recognizes the note in the order I entered them, but it's difficult or impossible to edit a note sequence.
What is the point of this interface? Do you have an explanation of why it works this way? Is it in the help file? Where?
Overall, I would say this is a good program marred by bizarre idiosyncrasies like this. These oddities prevent me from recommending this program to music teachers and students.

Hi John,

This is a bug that was in an early build, but it has been fixed. Please update your installation by downloading the latest update (HELP menu on Windows and Mac OS 10.8, or EarMaster Pro menu on Mac OS 10.5/6/7).

That's nice, but when I check for updates, it says there are no updates because I'm on the latest version (build 630PXi). So why is this happening?
