Metronome problem

Post by Winnie »

I can use the rhythm exercises only with the optical metronome.
The acoustic signal has a slightly different frequency: after some beats it runs out of sync.
While clapping in accordance with the optical metronome gives fine results (although difficult to keep in view while following the notes), orienting on the acoustic signal gives a mess. Certainly both should be the same.
Does anybody now about this problem? What can I do about it?

The majority of Windows set ups will create some latency, no matter how new and powerful they may be. This is due to the architecture of Window's default sound driver.
Fortunately, there is a tool in EarMaster to calibrate a latency compensation.

Start EarMaster, click on TOOLS>MIDI DEVICES and use the "Synchronize rhythms" tool.

Click on the start button. The flash box will start blinking and you will hear some clapping. You can then adjust the delay in milliseconds until the flashing and the clap sound are synchronized.

For example, on my computer here at the office, I have Win7, Intel i5 2,66ghz, 4gb RAM, and my latency is set to 120ms.

Thank you for the answer.
I have checked the FAQs and played with the options and yes, I have adjusted the latency compensation and it works nice for this part - it is a constant offset.
What I experience is that the FREQUENCY of picture and sound is different. When the metronome picture has the fequency of say 90 beats per minute, the sound has a frequency of 90.05 or so frequency. So after a while the sound of the 1 is heard between 1 and 2, moving on to the 2 and so on.
I haven't found any frequency adjustment yet in the tools, so I am wondering whether I am experiencing something strange here?

I must say this issue is absolutely unheard of, and I asked the devs who had no idea how that could be possible. If you have a screen recording program, could you please send a video file of it to our support address so that we may see what happens and how important the beat shift is. Thanks in advance.

I don't know how to record the problem, but I have made some experiments with following findings:

- Four beats per bar at 100 beats per minute: at starting, the first beat visual and acoustic were at the same time and it took about 40 bars until the first acoustic beat was together with the second visual beat in a bar.
- Then the system seems to stabilize: Until the eightieth bar, as far as I went, it did not change perceptibly anymore.
- When I stop and start again immediately, the difference stays the same.
- When I stop and start after a minute or so, the first acoustic beat is back at the first visual beat and the difference is building up again during the next fourty bars.

The midi out I use is "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" and the delay I entered - which leads to good results in synchronizing the exercise with the visual metronome - is 200 ms. My Laptop is a Dell Latitude E6400.

Any help? Or should I do a different experiment?

I'd love to buy this program along with my band and use it as a tool for all of us, we will be buying multiple licenses and would love to know if this issue will be fixed.

I currently have trial and the mouse (clapping feature) does go out of synch, I am keeping the correct tempo and make sure to clap it on time and it just goes out of synch each time.
